If the guy with the most toys at the end wins, John Amend has a pretty big lead on most of us. We spent the weekend after Labor Day at John's house on Cedar Creek Lake. Bill Daves (see April 15, above) used to work with John, who has made his fortune in Dallas commercial real estate. John's house, which he calls AmendWorld, sits on a promontory sticking out into the lake, where a tributary cove forms around the back side of the house. When you are in the house and look out on almost every side, you see nothing but water; it sort of has the effect of looking like you are on a boat. A couple of ski boats, a half dozen SeaDoos, four wheelers, a trampoline, a clubhouse for the kids, a beach volleyball court, a basketball court, a white sand beach (imported sand instead of the regular lake mud), hot tub, the list goes on and on.

Anyway, Mr. Amend is kind enough to let Bill Daves have the house for the weekend occasionally, and Bill abuses that trust by inviting miscreants like the Drummonds to join them. Actually, this year, it was the Daves, the Wallings, and the Drummonds. The weather was beautiful, as was the company. Life is good. . . .
